Poets and poetry lovers, we welcome you to the thirty seventh session of our poetry open mic at The Gaslight, Kuala Lumpur.
BERNICE CHAULY is the award-winning author of six books of poetry and prose, which include Growing Up With Ghosts (2011) and Onkalo (2013, “Direct, honest and powerful” —JM Coetzee). Born in George Town, Penang to Chinese-Punjabi teachers, she read Education and English Literature in Canada as a government scholar. She was an Honorary Fellow at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program (IWP) in 2014, has served as Festival Director of the George Town Literary Festival since 2011, and now lectures at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC). Her highly anticipated debut novel Once We Were There (2017) begins during one of Malaysia’s most tumultuous periods, the Reformasi of 1998.
Bassman and singer-songwriter, LEON SAPPHIRE is an up and coming R&B gem. He shields his insights on the insanity of modern life behind lyrical mazes and dark hooks. While he remains elusive about his past, he insists on sharing the lessons that he has learned while on his path of hedonism. He has performed alongside Akhyla’s Fong Shelhiel and has opened for Canadian producer Tennyson.
